Garth Jennings has directed ‘Good Stuff’ for Mother London, the fully computer animated commercial for Fox’s biscuits. The campaign features Vinnie, a fast-talking, ‘wise-guy’ ‘danda’ – a dog/panda hybrid extolling the virtues of the biscuits. The campaign includes a 2 x 60; 1 x 30; and a 10; viral version and is a collaboration between Garth, Producers Nick Goldsmith at Hammer and Tongs and Kirsten Kates at Mother, London and MPC.

The character design for Vinnie was originally conceived by Mother with Director Garth Jennings and input from MPC’s Andrew Brooks alongside illustrations submitted to the Clients. Once submitted the character’s design went into research, and when agreed a maquette of the character was produced by Asylum effects to be used by MPC creature concept artist Virginie Bourdin. Virginie created a realistic render of the character with a detailed ‘cartoon’ look including his trademark panda coloured fur.

Once the concept was signed off, Vinnie was created by MPC’s 3D team. Andreas Graichen was charged with modelling and rigging, with animation by Jorge Meurer. MPC’s in-house fur simulation tool, ‘Furtility’ was used for texturing him, and adding and grooming his fur. With Vinnie’s speech incurring minimal movement out of the side of his mouth, it was also important to maintain control of the lip sync. Reference for his style of speech was sourced from gangster movies and also from the director himself.
